Dubuque County is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and founded as an early lead mining area. It was named after the first European settler in Iowa, Julian Dubuque. The city of Dubuque, the county seat, is surrounded by many steep hills, bluffs, and ravines giving beautiful views and scenery to the area.
